I recently decided to be self aware and admit that I spend WAY too much time on TikTok.
I love TikTok. Especially, the algorithm that I built for myself. It’s a space of positivity, growth and information BUT it’s still social media and I’m still doom scrolling. Which will have long term negative effects on my brain. So I’ve set a screen limit of 40mins a day, with a 10mins break at interval. So I can only open TikTok 4x a day for 10mins. I think that’s a healthy way to start.
I’ve realized that some of us spend so much time on social media doom scrolling because we consider it to be “fun”. Well, there are less harmful and more impactful ways to give your brain the fun it needs.
I’ve done my research for you guys, so here are 5 fun ways to feed your brain:
1. Tap into your muscle memory.
Do you remember what you had for dinner last night? Or the show you watched two months ago? Or the name of the stranger you met in May?
Practicing recall is a simple yet powerful way to exercise your brain. Try memorizing short notes, quotes, or even your grocery list without writing it down. Doing this keeps your memory sharp, but it also gives you a sense of accomplishment when you get it right. Think of it as a mini workout for your mind.
2. Experiment with new recipes.
Cooking is more than just making food. When you try a new recipe, your brain engages in problem-solving; what’s the next step?, sequencing, and even math when measuring ingredients. Plus, there’s sensory—smells, textures, and tastes all stimulate different parts of your brain.
The best part? You get to eat your experiment afterwards, whether it’s a success or a “learning experience”. A win is a win!
3. Read
Reading is food for the mind. Whether you prefer long form like a novel, catching up on newsletters like Substack, or even reading short blog posts (wink!), you’re expanding your vocabulary, improving focus, and sparking your imagination.
The beauty of reading is that it teleports you to different worlds and perspectives, while strengthening your brain’s processing power. Pick something you’re curious about, and let your brain feast on the words.
4. Play Mind Games
Games are such a fun way to exercise your brain. From Sudoku and crossword puzzles to Scrabble or word searches, they improve concentration, boost problem-solving skills, and keep your mind flexible.
Even mobile apps can be great for mental stimulation. And if you’re competitive, challenge a friend, it turns brain training into bonding time.
I’ve been playing “2 Player Games” with my friends, and it’s always so fun and extremely mentally stimulating to play together.
5. Listen to Podcasts
Podcasts are like on-the-go classrooms for your brain. Whether you’re into self-development, history, science, or even comedy, there’s a podcast for every mood and curiosity.
The beauty of podcasts is that you can learn while doing other things—walking, cooking, commuting. They expose you to new ideas, perspectives, and knowledge without feeling like heavy studying.
My favorite podcasts to listen to right now are Working Hard with Grace Beverley, Aspire with Emma Grede, Saved not Soft by Emy Moore and In Totality with Megan Ashley.
Feeding your brain doesn’t have to feel boring. It is truly possible to keep your mind sharp while having fun in the process.. The more variety you add, the more your brain thrives—so switch it up, try new things, and enjoy the benefits.
I’ve definitely began incorporating these into my day to day routine and I really hope you guys are able to pick a few things from this post.
