The Art Of Thinking Positively

Good morning, afternoon or evening depending on whatever part of the world you’re in! Welcome or welcome back to my lil corner of the world, it’s your favorite author, Ib🤍

Recently, something funny happened to me that motivated me to write this post. I was waiting for my dad to come home, so I somehow found a way to squeeze myself into my favourite couch, one seater, and I napped. I got up later and noticed my shorts felt a little “freer”. I realised my shorts tore, like ripped. These were my favourite shorts; I’ve had them for about seven years, if not more. I loved how comfortable it was, and it was just the perfect length. For a moment, I was pretty bummed, then I shrugged it off and said, “The universe is probably telling me that it is time to move on. Its service to me is over”.

Mind you, I am very attached to my personal belongings. I can be very selfish with them, and I cry or get very upset when I lose or can’t use them, so I was stunned that I handled that situation very well.

You might be wondering, “How does this relate to thinking positively. That is such a small issue”. It is, but I used this instance cause big changes start from small. You can’t expect to think positively about huge situations if you can’t see the light in the littlest ones.

There are 3 major ways I have improved in positive thinking:

💭 Practice

Unless it’s a God-given skill, to be good at something, you have to practice it. If you think negatively about a situation, flip it around. There will be a positive side to it; you just have to look harder.

I mentioned that when I first started working at this present place, I hated it so much because of the time I had to wake up in the morning. I had to drag myself out of bed every morning to get ready, and I would frown all morning because I did not want to be there, but it became draining for me. Negative energy drains you.

I decided to find something about this job that would motivate me to get up in the morning. Since I work at the front desk, I decided that this experience is going to help with my conversational/social skills and help me build my confidence. Has it? Yes, by a significant amount. I broke down how I did it in my recent post, so check it out!

I also try to romanticise my morning as much as possible cause, believe me, no one is happy getting up at 4 am, but you have to! So suck it, and don’t be a pain to everyone around you. I listen to music as I get ready, I dress to look and feel good, I put on a podcast on my way, I have my coffee before it’s time to clock in (even though I’m lactose intolerant), and I try to compliment as many people as I can.

It is still a pain to get up at 4 am, but because I now have my positive reasons and purpose for doing that, it doesn’t feel like such a burden anymore.

💭 Gratitude

Gratitude is one of the most effective ways to switch your mindset into one that’s positive—being in a mental space where you’re thankful for the things that happen to you whether good or bad.

The truth is that bad things will happen, that’s a given. I like to think that bad things happen for a reason, to teach a lesson. Remember that all things work together for the good of those who love God, so bad situations are not coincidental. They happen for a reason, for your good, to teach and guide you so be grateful for both good and bad.

I know it’s easier said than done but the more you practice, the easier it gets.

💭 Positive energy

The saying, “You are who you hang out with” is so true. The people you let into your life significantly impact you, so you have to be pretty selective. Having many friends is excellent, but not everyone should have access to your personal space.

There are friends that, no matter what you tell them, good or bad, they always end up dampening your spirit or trying to compete with your problem like “I have it much harder than you”. You tell them you have a headache, they’ll say they’ve had a migraine since they were born.

There will be friends that will be good to you. When you speak negatively about a situation, they’ll help you find a positive light. They’ll empower you or be there for you when you’re down, and life just seems easier with those kinds of people.

I’ve surrounded myself with negative-thinking people in the past all because I wanted friends. These people aren’t bad, and it’s not like they were terrible friends or treated me terribly. We just could not go a day without negative talk. I can’t put all the blame on them cause I was also a negative-thinking person at that time, so we were feeding off each other’s negativity. We would start some baseless drama or gossip about other people’s baseless drama. Thinking about it now, it wasn’t very pleasant.

I intentionally separated myself from those people to heal and improve my mental state. It’s great having multiple friends that you can call and text anytime. My WhatsApp is pretty dull now. I rarely open it unless it’s to text my family or check my school group chats, but it is so peaceful now. My circle is super tiny, and I love it.

What you consume is also a great way to improve. In my post about social media cleansing, I mentioned how I had to get off Twitter cause it was not good for my mental health. The music you choose to listen to significantly impacts how you think, and that’s a fact.

I could go on and on, but I learnt that the attention span of an average human is shorter than a goldfish , so I try to keep my posts as brief as possible so let me know in the comments if you want me to do a second part.

Thank you so much for reading today’s post! I would love to read your thoughts on this, so I’d appreciate if you leave a comment. The messages and feedback you send are not taken for granted.
