How to Stay Consistent with Writing: 5 Realistic Tips for Busy Creators

First post in almost 3 weeks and I’m writing about how to stay consistent? How ironic, Ib.

In my first year of blogging, I used to publish almost everyday because it was during Covid so I was out of school and feeling jobless at home.

Comparing my current consistency levels with my past levels is unrealistic because I’ve got so much going on for me now asides this blog. Especially with final year work, coupled with working a remote job, and other exciting things that have been happening in my life. I’m super grateful to be this kind of “busy”.

Over the years, I’ve built a system that has worked for me and has helped me to stay consistent even when I get busy or unmotivated.

This post is actually a request I got from a fellow blogger, Bhavya Raj. Thank you so much Bhavya! I hope you enjoy the post.

Here’s how I’ve been able to stay consistent with blogging:

I remember my ‘why’.

There are definitely moments I’ve wanted to quit blogging or just go on a long hiatus especially during times when I don’t see my desired results. But I always remind myself of my ‘why’.

In anything you do; school, work, passions and purpose, you have to have your ‘why’. If not, anything can easily pull you away from your focus or make you give up on your dream.

Know your ‘why’ and always remember it.

Plan Ahead and Schedule Posts.

Honestly, the scheduling feature has been a game changer for me. I cannot remember the last time I drafted a post and published in real time.

Scheduling posts ahead saves so much time and energy. If you want to be publishing on Mondays, make sure you’ve written and scheduled your post by weekend. Believe me, it’s a lifesaver.

Plan ahead. Block out time in your day to write and stay committed to it.

I give myself Grace.

As much as it’s great to brag about posting every 2 days or every week, you have to remember that you’re human. Circumstances happen and life changes all the time.

I change my blog schedule every year because my current reality isn’t the same as my previous ones so my schedule also has to adjust. There was a time I could publish every 5 days, there was a time I could so 3 days in a week, sometimes 2 days and sometimes once a week. There might come a time in the future when I’m less busy and I can do 5 days in a week again. But that’s not me right now.

Don’t beat yourself up because you believe you’re not doing as much as you used to or as much as others are doing. Consistency looks different for everybody.

Set realistic standards for yourself and give yourself grace.

Write down every thought.

One of the struggles we face is not knowing what to write.

The creative juices don’t flow everytime so when it does, make sure you note your ideas down because you will forget. And that stuff is painful!

One downside to this is that what you might find interesting now, future you might have no interest in writing. But sometimes you will find some hidden gems that you completely forgot about and still want to write on.

I do it cause I love it.

Overall, I believe that it’s easier to be consistent with something if you enjoy doing it. Not because of others, or for some other motive but because you genuinely love doing it.

If you’re struggling to stay consistent, know we’ve all been there. Manage your time and show up however you can. That still counts as consistency.
