It’s Ib!
Merry Christmas in arrears everyone! Hope you had a good day yesterday.
I apologise for being MIA last week. I was dealing with a couple of things—one of which I want to address today.
I think it’s so important to train and guard your mind. Your mental state affects almost every other aspect of your life. It’s pushing yourself into a deep hole if your mind isn’t in the right place.
It’s also crucial to be self-aware of your mind and body. You can feel a certain way and not know why, and then you waste time tackling the wrong issue, creating more problems.
Recently, I wrote out my goals for 2024 and mentally broke down how I plan to achieve them, but somehow, I started to feel that I would not be able to reach them because I’m not doing enough. Then doubt and fear began to creep into my mind, and I felt overwhelmed.
One thing that overwhelms us is focusing too much on our destination. We get too caught up on “when am I going to get there?”, “am I even going to get there?” “What if I don’t achieve this at the end?”. These kinds of thoughts can be super overwhelming.
Forget about the destination and focus on the process
If your goal is to become a successful basketballer, but you’re too busy wasting your time and draining your energy on thinking about whether you will become a successful basketballer, there’s less chance of you actually being one. But if you say I want to become a successful basketballer, have it at the back of your mind, write down steps and mini goals that’ll lead you to become one in the long run and then actually commit to doing those steps and achieving those mini goals, there’s a really high chance you’ll become one.
The way that I’m trying to make my goals seem less overwhelming is by “living in the present”. I am focusing on here and now and ultimately pushing aside any thoughts on December 2024 because that is just too far ahead in the future for me to worry about.
The big question is, “What can I do today, right now, to bring me one step closer to achieving my goal?”.
For someone who wants to become the healthiest version of themselves, that could be taking a 20-minute walk or going to the market and buying fruits. For someone who wants to be more financially stable, it could be downloading an ebook on financial literacy, creating a weekly/monthly budget or looking up investment options in your area. For someone who wants to get their CGPA up, it means creating a study timetable and committing to it, joining a study group if that’s your thing or finding what study method works best for you.
For me, the most overwhelming part of my goals are the ones related to my blog. I feel like no matter how many posts I publish, if people don’t like or connect with what I write and don’t go the extra mile to support and share the posts, then I will remain where I am. I think writers would relate to this feeling more.
I’m reminding myself to forget the destination and focus on the process. Commit to my mini goals, like setting the number of posts that should be published in a week, how active I am on the social platforms I share the links on, improving aesthetics, guest posts and all that. If I focus on bringing my A game into the actions I have to take each day or week to bring me closer to my end goal, eventually, these efforts compound, and there will be a significant increase from where I was. So even if I don’t achieve that goal, I’m also not where I was at the time of setting that goal, and that’s growth.
This was a hack I figured out during reflection and I really felt like I needed to share it on here for anyone who may be going through the same thing I was.
I’m super proud of you for having a vision or a goal that you’ve set for yourself no matter how big or small you think the goal is. I’m proud that you’re taking steps to make your 2024 better than your 2023. I support you and I love you🤍
Thank you so much for reading today’s post! Make sure to like the post if you enjoyed it and I would love to read your thoughts so I’d appreciate if you leave a comment.
