4 Hard Truths I Learned After Starting My Small Business

If you didn’t know, your girl started a small jewelry business in April!

If you’ve been here long enough then you know how much of an avid jewelry lover I am. My parents encouraged me to turn that love into a side hustle. I was very nervous at first because speaking to strangers is way out of my comfort zone but I was also excited because I mean….. it’s Jewelry!

Through the past months, it’s been such a learning process. I don’t know if I would continue doing it long term but I definitely do not regret starting my cute small business.

If you’ve been thinking of starting something of your own or you’re already on the journey, here are a few honest lessons I’ve picked up along the way.

Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone

This was probably one of the toughest things I had to learn.

My products were stocked in my room for weeks till I realized that I had to actually go out and speak to people in order to get them sold.

It was SO uncomfortable at first. I was extremely shy, even when I was speaking to people I knew. Overtime, it got easier.

We really need to start purposefully placing ourselves in uncomfortable situations because it’s in those moments that we grow.

You Are Your Best Marketing Tool

Only sell what you’re proud of and comfortable in. Because if you don’t believe in it, how can you market yourself to someone else?

Majority of the pieces I sold were from people just seeing them on me and liking it.

Wear/Use what you sell WITH pride.

Your Family/Friends Are Not Your Target Audience

A lot of people find this hard to accept but your family members and your friends do NOT have to patronize your work, if there really not interested in it. If they’re doing it out of loyalty or love, that’s great! But you’re not entitled to that.

So be grateful for your loved ones that go out of their way to support you in your ventures.

There Will Be Down Days

Down weeks, infact.

Don’t think people will patronize you every time you share your stuff. There will be times that you’ll go days or weeks without a single sale.

I know it’s easier said than done, but don’t be discouraged! There will be WIN days, also.

Running a small business isn’t always cute packaging and aesthetic posts, it’s growth, grit, and a lot of confusion. But I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. If you’re just starting out or thinking about it, take the leap. It won’t be perfect, but you’ll learn, evolve, and probably laugh at yourself along the way (I definitely have).

Cheers to doing scary things, selling your stuff, and learning as you go!

Your jewelry is so pretty!! Tbh I didn’t know that you recently started a small business. Goes to show how little I use social media! I’m really out of the loop for a lot of things. As for marketing, you are 100% correct – it starts and ends with you. You are your best advertiser.

For me I haven’t been online because I’ve been gaming instead of writing (it’s bad…) I’m hoping to get back into writing. Ended up upgrading my WP plan (yet again) which will hopefully give me more of a reason to blog again.
