How are we doing? Hope everyone is taking good care of themselves! I’m trying to so everyone should too!
It’s been a year and 9 months since I started blogging (Dec 31st, 2019)…one of the most spontaneous decisions I’ve ever made😂. I didn’t really plan on blogging, I just liked the idea of it and since I’ve always loved writing, I decided to try it out so of course, without any guidance or experience, I was bound to make certain mistakes.
Today, I decided to share with you the mistakes I made in my first year of blogging.
• No interactions with other bloggers
This is probably my biggest mistake 💀. If you take a look at my old posts (you probably shouldn’t), I did no collaborations last year and the only people I featured were my friends in school or church😂. I didn’t understand how to find other bloggers so I didn’t bother trying. Unless you followed me then I’d follow back after reading a few of your posts but I really didn’t interact with other bloggers at all in my first year. That might be my biggest regret.
It wasn’t until this year around May/June that I actively started interacting with other bloggers and working on collabs and features but before then, I just came on the app, wrote posts, published and left. I don’t know how I was able to enjoy blogging cause blogging is really all about your community. They’re the ones that make blogging fun!
I advice every new blogger, please interact with us😂. There’s nothing bloggers love more than interacting with other bloggers. It’s fun and you’ll also be able to reach more bloggers. Try to collab with your fav bloggers. I promise you you’ll love it!
(Also, please leave your links in the comments, I’d love to check out everyone’s blogs)
• “Excessive” Caring about Stats
To be honest, I think this is still a struggle for most bloggers. It’s hard to not care about your blog stats cause a lot of work goes into creating content for blogs so of course, we’d want to see if people liked it or engaged with it. You get me?
But I think at the end of the day, if you’re blogging for the right reasons, stats won’t matter. If you’re not doing it for views, the views won’t hurt “as much” when they’re low. Like someone blogging about positivity will be more interested about making an impact in their readers lives than the stats even if they are only 5 readers.
• Social media
I’m the worst person when it comes to social media. I probably won’t be able to give any good advice cause I’m still not good at it yet. Social media is my least favorite part of blogging, having it share it to different platforms is just so stressful. Sometimes, I still forget I have to😭
Who wants to be my social media manager? I’ll pay you with kindness😂
I’m very very awful with social media so sometimes I forget or honestly choose not to promote it. But one tip I will give is, when you want to share your links anywhere, attach a short and straightforward preamble with it. Like a short summary of what the post is about, in a very catchy and engaging way. More people will likely click on it if your preamble is nice.
• Blogging without a schedule
When I first started blogging, I didn’t realize it was important to have a blog schedule. I just blogged whenever I liked. Sometimes I would publish a post everyday of the week, sometimes I wouldn’t publish for an entire week. That’s not the best way to run or grow a blog.
Your readers should be able to know when you post if you want them to read it. If you post however you like, they’re going to read it however they like but when it’s known to your readers that you post on Monday’s, then they will have you in mind and look forward to your posts. It also helps you stay organized rather than doing thing haphazardly. Through your schedule, you’re going to know what day and time works best for you and how you can improve on that.
Alright guys! Those were few of the mistakes I made when I first started blogging. There are probably other minor ones but these are the major mistakes which I think if you avoid, then you’re off to a great start.
I hope you enjoyed this post! See you all later✨
